As an aspiring screenwriter myself, I've often thought of moving to L.A., but the thought of having to get a car sickens me. So I can't wait to see what results came of your experiment!
Posted by: Josh Rachlis | March 2, 2007 1:20 AM
i can vouch for the carless in l.a. life - i live it! it's way more possible - and enjoyable - than most people think.
well done on the film!! it looks fabulous and i can't wait to see the FEATURE!!
Posted by: rachel | March 2, 2007 12:36 PM
I totally relate, too--fresh mascara catches the bugs better.

Loved it can't wait to see the feature, and I loved the music!!!
Posted by: becca | March 4, 2007 12:20 PM
Great trailer! I can't imagine living anywhere without a car for 80 days. I eagerly await the rest of the movie to be inspired.

HOORAH!!
When I moved here from London I was carless for several months while I sorted out my life and tried to get my license (that's right, I never got it in London). I never left Santa Monica unless someone was driving me. Can't even imagine how hard it must have been... Can't wait to see the entire film!
Posted by: claressinka | March 4, 2007 6:31 PM
Great concept. Seems like this movie has more than a few opportunities to enjoy how funny real life challenges can be. Looking forward to the feature.

I live in a smaller city and can't imagine life without a car, although I've considered it. I'm more interested in the dating part, though. Get on with the movie!! Is life without a car possible?
Posted by: Chris | March 5, 2007 7:45 PM
HEY EVERYBODY! Thanks for writing and visiting and rating. For more information on the film, go to www.carlessinla.com. And to keep it real, go without your car for at least one day a week. It will open worlds...and possibly save this one.
Love,
Katie and Drew (filmmakers)

Well, I personally know Katie and I have to say I thought she was crazy when she did this by choice, as apposed to a person who has to do it, Me. But I am so proud of you Katie. I can't wait to see the finished film. Maybe I am overlooking the joy of riding the bus... LOL.
Posted by: Cookie | March 7, 2007 10:17 AM
Erik and i have shared one car for 4 years in LA. We've taken the buses, participated in rideshare and used our bikes to get from here to there. It CAN be done.
Go katie go! Great job!

I'm a socal native -- 4th generation -- and the system in L.A. is insane (nothing connects!). It can take 2 hours to go via bus from Universal to USC. Amazing job Ms. katie.
There used to be red trolley cars my mom took from Redlands to the beach in the 40s -- cheap! then (see the film Roger Rabbit) the rail system was bought up and destroyed. You go woman!
Posted by: Laurel W | March 7, 2007 1:17 PM
It's been incredibly refreshing and inspiring to see someone taking such a forceful step toward change. Oh yeah, and the film beats the pants off all those others there at the right. I'm just sayin'.
Posted by: Howard | March 7, 2007 1:29 PM
I want to see Katie's entire documentary. It sounds fabulous! Way to go!
Posted by: Marisa | March 7, 2007 1:42 PM
Katie, I am so proud of you! It took a strong will to stick with your goal and a creative mind to make the film. I hope that the message reaches a lot of people. I've sent the link to my family and friends. Can't wait to see all of it. Great work, Alissa

This is so importan for the youth!!! We really need to become more awear of our actions.

Katie and Drew:
What an entertaining way to explore car culture in LA! Katie, you're so much fun to watch, I can't wait to see the film on screens across the nation.

I've known Katie for many years and she is a dear freind of mine.
Now let me tell you folks- the most fascinating angle to me about this documentary is that Katie, besides being an artist, an enviromentalist, and a free spirit, is through and through a Girly-Girl. She loves beauty, fashion, boys...you get the idea...
She and I are shopping queens on Montana Ave., we go out and flirt with boys, and go through eachother's closets and marvel over an aqua Anthropologie skirt (aqua is our fave color) or a pair of glittery fairy wings from last Halloween...
The coolest and most interesting thing about Katie's fim, "Carless in L.A." is that it asks the question: How does a cute, hip, fun-loving L.A. girl get by without a car?
We know its easy for the hardcore hippies but what about the rest of us--those of us who maybe arent willing to sacrifice our vanity or our sanity, just so we can pedal a bike through clouds of bus exhaust to get to that first date with the boy we are in lust with and be able to say "Well, my hair has collapsed, my clothes are wrinkled, my makeup has melted off, and I smell like fuel, but my footprint is carbon-free!"
As a fellow L.A. gal who straddles the dichotomous definitions of 'devoted, passionate Environmentalist' and 'young, attractive Actress enjoying the L.A. scene', I can tell you- it is indeed a Dance of Balance.
For example- I booked a National tour of a Disney Broadway musical 7 months ago... before I left L.A. to go on the road, I sold my gas guzzling car. When the tour is over in May, and I come back to my beloved L.A., I wil be buying an alternative fuel car... Im in the process of researching what the greenest cars are...looking into ethanol, bio-diesel and of course the hybrids. Maybe Katie's film will give me the info I need to make my final decision.
Keep rocking it Katie-girl. I love you and I cant wait to see how your film plays out! :)

Nice job. I think there should be someone in every big city who tries the 80 day experiment - even in places that have real winters.
Posted by: Jeff | March 8, 2007 1:41 AM
I've been carless for roughly 360 days, but that's ONLY because I live in a city with fantastic mass transportation. LA? I can't even imagine. Awesome trailer. Can't wait to see it.
Posted by: Lori MacLeod | March 8, 2007 8:26 AM
Creative,inspiring..anyone who will actually live it has a story to tell..Great job...
Posted by: lulu | March 8, 2007 9:39 AM
I'd like to see the whole movie, but from the preview it seems more like its sending out a "you can do it!" message. It's more of a "This is Soooo har, but aren't I an awesome person for doing it?"
I can tell you from experience- It's not THAT hard to go carless in LA. This city has awesome public trasportation!! Taking the bus IS slow and it does take some getting used to, but it's really not that big of a deal.
I'm sure it would be a lot harder to do in the middle of nowhere, where everyone actually does have to rely on cars because there is no public transportation.
Posted by: Christie | March 8, 2007 12:07 PM
Very nice little short. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the time of elation after the trials and tribulations of your experiment. Was there a time when the fear and frustration changed to "I can do this comfortably.?" Or is it just impossible to remain carless given the sprawl of L.A.?
Posted by: Sri Gyan McCaughan | March 8, 2007 12:29 PM
Great idea!!

It's sad how many people honestly feel that traveling sustainably is "crazy". Especially when owning a car is so difficult, stressful, and expensive. See how effective the car companies' ads are, they convince people that something that's so terrible is a necessity!
Oh, and good for you Katie, for being brave enough to challenge your old beliefs!
Posted by: Turil | March 8, 2007 1:29 PM
I'm glad you made this if it makes people who are unaware of LA's public transportation system use it.
On the other hand, I'm afraid (not having seen the film)that it distorts the reality of LA public transit.
We may not have subways like NYC, but our buses are fast, reliable, on time, clean (inside and in terms of air quality) and well connected.
The problem with LA is that the conception among wealthy people is that our transportation sucks. TONS of blue collar people use the transit system every day. In fact, LA's bus ridership is only second in the nation.
Also, Rapid bus lines run through all of the most highly populated areas of LA AND THESE BUSES OPERATE 24 HOURS A DAY!!
If you live in the suburbs, it might be hard to use public transportation, but that's true of any American city.
If you live anywhere between Santa Monica and Downtown, or Downtown and Long Beach, public transportation in LA is easy and effective and LOTS of people use it. Everyone who has doubts should get on a rapid bus on Wilshire and take it either direction. TONS of riders. And it's fast too!
I do applaud your effort, though, because it'll get people to see what they choose not to--that LA without a car is not only doable, but DONE every day by millions of people.

Living in Hailey Idaho without a car and a baby is EASY and FUN! You go girl...thanks for spreading the love...not the carbon! I cant wait to see the film in full.

Inspring—absolutely. Pragmatic—you bet. If she can do it in LA, we should all be able to do it wherever we live. Compelling—can't wait to see the whole thing complete with Katie's advenutres, interviews and all!

this seemed to me as a trailer to their film. i'm interested in the final piece, but for this contest, it did nothing for more than to say, use public transportation or ride a bike.
Posted by: fiona | March 10, 2007 2:02 PM
I can't wait to see the whole film Katie. Great job. Just reading your suggestion to go carless for 1 day a week made me nervous, which means it's probably a great idea. It's always valuable to push past what we think is the impossible. Thanks for encouraging us through your film.
Posted by: Britta Nelson | March 12, 2007 12:12 AM
Katie: I love it and I can't wait to see the entire movie. I love all of your adventures. Good luck!!
Posted by: Karen Brock | March 14, 2007 11:03 PM
this is a nice idea for a film, but taking the bus in LA really isnt as dramatic as this makes it seem. cars are everything in LA not because its actually difficult to get around without one, but because people here are lazy show offs!
Posted by: mary p | April 18, 2007 5:56 AM
i just watched this again and realized how dramatic and ridiculous it is. how about you try giving up your car in bumfuck idaho and find out in which place are cars really "everything??"
this movie seems less about getting the message out there that it IS possible and more about one girls way of getting her piece of the green pie. she definately seems more concerned about how haaaard it is to get around in LA, a city with an extensive and reliable bus and metro system, than about how accessable and easy to use the system is!! I think you need to hire new editor, girl, and rethink your focus!!!!
